The Scurvin Family Genealogy Timeline – (Jamaican Descendants)

First of all, all thanks and praise must be given to my dear Friend and Brother, Lennie Gaudet, for taking the MASSIVE amount of time to painstakingly put this very detailed list together that has brought so much satisfaction and closure in the years of wondering who my earlier fore bearers were in a way that I couldn’t ever have imagined.

The various Social Media platforms have truly amplified my curiosity after discovering so many “Scurvins” that I know HAD to be related to me but didn’t exactly know the connection. Now here is our chance to finally fill in those once elusive gaps!

While we can go back but so far as descendents of slaves, the fact of the matter is that most people can only go back but so far on their family tree because most never thought ahead to document their knowledge of family connections as well as the details that a mere family tree could never expose.

Add to this the fact that the technology wasn’t available to us in those times as we had to depend on the faded photos and oral histories that have almost certainly morphed over time with each persons interpretation of a tale or the typos that can transpire during the official birth/death record dictation as is evident with the many spellings of our surname.

That being said, I urge all who have the name Scurvin and have Jamaican roots (and beyond) to go through this detailed family timeline to see where you may be connected. If you have anything to add to this please contact me direct by phone ANYTIME 24/7 at 407.924.8793 or by email at [email protected] .

Remember, this doesn’t tell the entire story but it’s a HUGE start, and I need everyone to join in by adding ALL NAMES of your immediate family members past and present because the missing pieces of this interesting puzzle may surface from someone who reads this posting.

Leave your info in the comment box below for all to see or contact me directly if there are any privacy issues (which I will respect). Also send photos and all other pertinent information so we can make this a living breathing account of our collective family experience for many generations of our family to come!

Once again, thank you Lennie Gaudet! You are Heaven sent and an Angel indeed!

I anxiously await all of your responses/replies!

Sincerely,

Lance Scurvin

St. Ann Jamaica

Lennie Gaudet to Lance Scurvin: Just got back into Jamaican genealogy these past couple of weeks.

Started compiling more of the Stirling/ Skurving /Scurvin family genealogies of Jamaica. After putting all Scurvins into family groups, and following their movement throughout Jamaica from the earliest Skurving /Scurvin around the 1760’s, we can conclude you are a direct descendant of the overseer Matthew Skirving (Scurvin) born before or about 1764 in Edinburgh Scotland and one of his slave women.

We can follow his descendants to the parish of St Ann.

What really intrigues us is that you are a fine artist yourself, and your are a direct descendant of Matthew Skirving (Scurvin) and his “Mulatto” children and is also a direct relative of the famous Scottish artist Archibald Skirving (1749–1819) who was a famous Scottish portrait painter. This is very very interesting.

Scurvin Genealogy DocumentsAt first, we thought you were the Doctor William Skirving’s direct descendant. No, after grouping all the families together, his brother, Matthew Campbell Scurving/Sterling/Scurvin, your ancestor and his descendants settled in St Ann’s parish, Jamaica

Scurvin Clan Tartan

Mrs Matthew Sterling/Scurvin died in September 1784 giving birth…

I will be putting together a detailed ancestor report in PDF. This will take a few hours as I will be adding documents to support our findings. I will send it to you as soon as I finish. Attached to this message is your father’s chart. It only shows 5 generations back to Matthew Campbell Scurvin/Sterling(1784), son of Matthew Sterling (before 1764).

Before 1780 the surnames SKIRLING and STIRLING were used by distinctly different families in Forfarshire (or County of Angus) Scotland. Only over the period of about 1780-1820 did the Skirling families begin to adopt Stirling as their own surname. In those 40 years, Skirlings may appear in baptismal, marriage, probate and land records either way. After circa 1820, with a few exceptions, all of the Skirlings had switched to calling themselves Stirling. Some other variations of SKIRLING/STIRLING are: SCERVEN, SCURVIN, SCIRLIN, SCIRLINE, SKERLING, SKERVING, SKERVING, SKIRLANE, SKIRLEN, SKIRLER, SKIRLIE, SKIRLIN, SKIRLINE, SKIRLING, SKIRLINGE, SKIRLNG, SKIRTING, SKIRTON, SKIRVEN, SKIRVINE, SKIRVING, SKRLING, SKYRLIN, SKYRLING, SKYRLINGE, SKYRLYNG, STERLIN, STERLING, STERLYNG, STIRLEN, STIRLIN, STIRLINE, STIRLING, STIRLON, STIRLYING, STRIVELINGS.

Scurvin/Skirving is not as common a name as many others in Jamaica. That’s why we know you are all related as we go further back through the generations. Particularly in the parish of St Ann. Also, the family McKoy, Your Mariel McKoy, daughter of Adolphus McKoy, must be some how related to Colin Powell’s grandmother Maud Arial McKoy, daughter of Edwin Charles McKoy. They are the only McKoy family of Jamaica. They are all related.

Marriage record of your great grandfather Adolphus McKoy, son of Henry McKoy, on 29 April 1920 at Orange Hill, Brown’s Town, St Ann, Jamaica to Louisa Lawrence, daughter of Henry Lawrence:

Adolphus McKoy Marriage Record

Lennie Gaudet to Lance Scurvin: Colin Powell’s father Luther Theophilus Powell is from Top Hill, St Elizabeth. Luther married his mother Maud Arial McKoy on 28 December 1929 at St. Philip’s Church, New York, daughter of Edwin Charles McKoy and Alice Coote. Colin Powell’s grandparents were Aubrey Spencer Powell and Rosina Bromfield. In the 1880’s people did not move around as much as people today. They did not have the means or luxury. They married within their own communities.

General Colin Powell

Maude Areil McKoy born 4 january 1901 in Three Mile River, Westmorland, Jamaica, daughter of Edwin McKoy and Alice Coote must be related to your grandfather Adolphus McKoy. There are no other McKoy families. We will keep searching to find the connection. Anyway, you have another Scottish family line. Not unusual in Jamaica.

Maud Ariel McKoy

Lennie Gaudet: Forgot to say that Maude Areil McKoy is Colin Powell’s grandmother. She left Jamaica and moved in with Colin Powell’s parents and died in New
York on 03 June 1984.
Lance Scurvin: We lived in Washington Heights in Manhattan before moving to Richmond Hill, Queens New York (when I was 5 years old in September of 1968) and I found out on a CNN TV special that his family lived there also. Practically around the corner from where we lived on 454 West 152nd st. between St. Nicholas Ave. and Amsterdam Ave. The funny thing is that I remember my Father having this one picture in our photo album of who he referred to as his aunt (who was  grandmother Muriel’s sister)  and in the picture she was very fair skinned, but I totally forgot her first name!

Lennie Gaudet: Attached to this message is the death record of your half sister Joan Patricia Scurvin who died on 7 April 1943 aged 2 months old. We know that his first wife Ruby was from Highgate in the parish of St Mary, Jamaica. Still trying to find her family.

Lennie Gaudet: Now we have documented proof of your grandfather Hubert Scurvin, son of Charles Scurvin and Rachel Ann Walker married to Muriel McKoy, daughter of Adolphus McKoy:

Lennie Gaudet: Family groups are coming together now. Less confusing. Attached to this message is the birth record of your Dad’s sister Sytrie Adassa Scurvin, born 10 October 1920

Lennie Gaudet: “Now we have a “paper trail” going back to William Scurvin, a slave born on the Mount Pleasant Plantation before 1817 in the parish of St Thomas in the East, Jamaica. William Scurvin was the son of Matthew Campbell Scurving a mulatto child of Mathew Scurving, the overseer and an unknown slave woman at Mount Pleasant. Your great grandfather Charles Scurvin is the son of Alexander Scurvin who was the son of William, son of Matthew”

So much more work to be done. We have gathered some names and dates. Now lets “add meat to the bones” by studying the history surrounding these ancestors in the places they lived in. Then we can get a better understanding of the lives they lived.
