Corporal Punishment and Discipline is an issue that has resurfaced heavily in recent times due to the ever growing incidents of our children gone wild.
But first allow me to say that if I were asked to guess which scripture in the Bible would be the one that God would most likely insist on upgrading it would be:
Proverbs 23:13-14 – New International Version (NIV)
13 – Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.
14 – Punish them with the rod
and save them from death.
In modern days we basically say “Spare The Rod, Spoil The Child“, which, in actuality is NOT from the Bible but was written by Samuel Butler who wrote a satirical poem dealing with the many different factions in the English Civil War first published back in 1662.
I had to get that point straight before moving forward with our discussion to stop any misunderstanding proactively. That being said, I will accept that as a shorter version of Proverbs 23:13-14 because it basically means the same thing.
But when I look around me into the world and view the travesties that seem to never stop coming from wayward children and young adults, I couldn’t help but think to myself on a humorous level that God would want to go back into the Bible to upgrade His word to a more powerful command.
This is when I came up with the title for this show because in today’s world it appears that to not discipline ones children only sets them up to becoming the MONSTERS of tomorrow!
The decadence and rebellion in our children and teenagers has accelerated faster in the last two decades overall than ever before!
Yes, there have always been those rebellious teenage years but when you really and truly look into it and remain honest with yourself, there has been nothing like it on the face of this earth with the consistency that there is today.
You have more children actually KILLING their parents for just any reason at all. And I say it that way not to mean that there is ever a proper time to kill a parent because in my life experience I’ve spoken to teens who did just that after many years of sexual abuse.
So it will happen sometimes in a way where my heart goes out to them in an understanding manner. But when you are a kid who can easily punch your Mother in the face merely because she purchased the wrong cereal for you to eat in the morning before school, then something is terribly wrong!
Things have truly gotten out of hand and I believe the reason is that we lost the righteous control over their minds before this toxic satanic system got into their heads.
Here’s another one, and this happened just last week here in Orlando…….
A Sunday School Teacher was violently choked by 16 year old who regularly attends the Bible studies and is joined by his parents during the full service every weekend. What ticked this obviously toasted teen off? Well, the Sunday School instructor gently pulled him to the side and told him that he needs to obey the rules and bring his Bible to class……that’s it.
The next thing you know this teen had this woman up against the wall gasping for her life and the only thing that kept her meeting her Maker was the fact that it took several grown men to get him off of her!
Talk about losing it!
He should have then received the “all in one” ass whipping for that one!
But when you look at this situation even though this kid snapped out of nowhere, something was going on in his mind and if he had the fear of God in him then he most likely wouldn’t have done this.
Aside from a real mental issue (which too many of our youths these days display such symptoms) or drug use, this kind of unheard of displays of absolutely no self control could have been stopped in its tracks with more discipline on a physical (Not abusive) level along with the instruction to teach him what was right.
Now I know that there is more to that story as there had to be signs no matter how subtle to show that there was a problem in its infancy.
But the debate rages on – how much discipline is enough? How much is too much? Is there a one size fits all manner to discipline all youngsters? Or should we gauge our application of discipline according to the development and personality of the child.
Should we have “time outs” to point out what our children are doing wrong or are those merely exercises in futility to only create future mass murderers?
The range of opinions has not diminished over time as both ends of the spectrum of disciplinary approach has its strong points to make its points but on this night we will go deep and attempt to come to a conclusion on an issue that just won’t seem to go away.
Something is definitely wrong with our children today and for the most part the old school dyed in the wool elders feel that it’s because discipline has been removed from the collective psyche of our society.
