Boxing, much like life itself, is full of unpredictability. Just when you think the outcome is all but certain, the sport delivers a surprise that reminds you that nothing is ever guaranteed. Last night was a prime example of that unpredictability, as Anthony Joshua was knocked out by Daniel Dubois in a fight many thought would be a one-sided affair in Joshua’s favor. While hindsight is always 20/20, I had a hunch that Dubois, with his raw strength and hunger, might pose a significant challenge to the former heavyweight champion. And he did just that.
Anthony Joshua, a British boxing icon and Olympic gold medalist, has had a storied career filled with highs and lows. His rise to the pinnacle of the heavyweight division was nothing short of meteoric. From his gold medal victory at the 2012 Olympics in London to his dominant performances in the early years of his professional career, Joshua seemed destined for greatness. He quickly became the unified heavyweight champion, holding the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles, and was hailed as the next big thing in boxing. His victories over top-tier opponents like Wladimir Klitschko, Alexander Povetkin, and Joseph Parker cemented his status as one of the best in the world.
However, boxing has a way of revealing a fighter’s true character when the going gets tough, and for Joshua, that moment came in 2019 when he suffered a shocking defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr. in Madison Square Garden. That night, the world saw cracks in Joshua’s armor, and questions about his resilience and mental toughness began to surface. Although he avenged that loss six months later, the damage to his reputation as an invincible fighter had been done.
Since then, Joshua has had his fair share of ups and downs, losing to Oleksandr Usyk twice in 2021 and 2022. These defeats, while against a skilled and formidable opponent, raised concerns about whether Joshua’s heart was still in the fight game or whether he could truly reclaim his spot at the top of the division. And now, with this recent loss to Dubois, those concerns are more valid than ever.
In the case of Anthony Joshua, I believe his challenges go beyond just physical vulnerabilities. Yes, his chin has been questioned, but I think it’s more a mental hurdle than anything else. When faced with pressure, Joshua often appears to freeze, his fears surfacing at the worst possible moments, paralyzing him and rendering him unable to respond effectively. He is a highly skilled boxer, and when the fight goes his way, he can look unbeatable. But true fighters show their mettle when they’re under attack. And Joshua, for all his talent, seems to crumble when he’s pushed to his limits. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen. It’s a recurring theme in his career.
In many ways, Joshua’s demeanor in the ring has been compared to that of someone who is perhaps too emotional—a trait often associated with fighters who struggle under pressure. When the storm hits, a fighter must stand firm and hit back with all they’ve got. Yet, time and again, Joshua has faltered when faced with aggression. It’s not about size, strength, or skill at the highest levels of boxing. It’s about heart. And while Joshua possesses many admirable qualities, the heart of a fighter in the face of adversity remains in question.
At this point, I believe Anthony Joshua should seriously consider capitalizing on the fame, admiration, and success he’s garnered over the years. He’s a global star, beloved by fans in Britain and beyond. He has earned more money than most can even dream of, and his brand, physique, and marketable persona will ensure that he remains relevant long after his fighting days are over. While I’m in no position to tell him what to do, if I were in his shoes, I’d hang up the gloves and walk away while I still had my health.
We’ve seen many spectacular comebacks in sports, long after fans and journalists have urged athletes to retire. But for every comeback, there are countless stories of athletes who stayed in the game too long, risking their health and well-being for one last shot at glory. Joshua has already achieved what many can only dream of. He’s fought at the highest level, earned massive paydays, and solidified his place in boxing history. Why risk it all for a few more fights when the toll on his body and mind is only going to increase?
In this day and age, many athletes are manufactured and marketed before they’ve truly developed the qualities needed to sustain greatness. Joshua, no doubt, reached the pinnacle of the sport, but continuing to fight at this level isn’t worth the risk. What’s the point of having all that money if you’re too battered and broken to enjoy it? He’s got investments, fame, and the love of his fans. And while some may argue that he was never “the real thing,” the truth is that he was. He reached the top in a business that is as unforgiving as it gets, and his career was managed brilliantly. But now, he’s been exposed as a manufactured fighter who’s taken maximum advantage of the opportunities given to him.
The hustle is over, Anthony. You’ve worked hard, achieved more than most ever will, and you’re on top—regardless of what anyone says. You’ve earned more money than many will see in a lifetime. Don’t risk your health for one more payday. Step back, embrace your success, and venture into new avenues, whether in business or other lucrative opportunities. You’re a winner, not just financially, but in life. Not everyone can be a Mike Tyson or a Muhammad Ali. And that’s okay. You’ve carved out your own legacy.
Boxing has a long history of producing great champions and unforgettable stories. But it also has its share of tragedies and sad endings. Fighters who don’t know when to step away often pay the price later in life. You lost to Daniel Dubois, yes. But in the grand scheme of life, you’ve already won. Prioritize your health and your future. This game doesn’t get any easier, and the older you get, the harder it becomes to walk away unscathed.
No matter what you decide, I wish you the best. While I’ve never been your biggest fan, I respect what you’ve done in the ring. Your career has been filled with thrilling moments, and your ups and downs have provided plenty of entertainment. But in life, you’re loved, and don’t let those who want to profit off you push you into continuing. Just my two cents.
